Back in January, Nicole Higgins (The Buyer and Retail Coach) recommended me for a Fashion Design job to work with one of her clients Laura, the founder of Female Silhouette. Laura’s vision for Female Silhouette was to create a brand that empowered women to look incredible whilst also being functional and actually wearable when going about their every day lives.

How it began

Our journey started with Laura sharing her inspiration for the look of the brand which was Fashionable, Feminine and Comfortable. Having a clear vision for how you want your brand to look is so important, you want your range to be cohesive and for each of the styles to work alongside one another.

Building a Design Relationship:

Having an open and honest relationship is crucial with a Fashion Designer and Brand Founder. Laura and I worked hard to get the Debut Collection exactly as she had envisioned.

Key elements we considered were:

Price Point:

When designing for a brand it is important for us both to have an idea of the price point you will be retailing your product at. Most Start Up brands are a higher RRP than large retailers as it costs more to manufacture smaller runs of production as well as fabric and trim prices being a higher price as you will be buying less of them.

Setting the brand apart from the Rest:

What are the rest of the High Street doing and how can we make our offering better? Realistically you don’t want to be designing a version of the same slip skirt you saw on Boohoo as your prices will be much more expensive, so it is likely your customer would spend their money on the cheaper option. With this in mind we needed to make sure the Female Silhouette Range was that little bit more unique, which we did by combining beautiful design elements with Laura’s great idea of a quirky colour palette of lilac, mint and pink.

Sustainability:

A key function behind the brand was for the range to be interchangeable, so that the styles could be mixed and matched, not only with one another but also with other garments in your wardrobe. Consumers are more aware than ever of the impact their clothing is having on the world, meaning a lot more thought goes into buying a product now than ever before. We wanted to make sure that your money was spent investing in an item of clothing that would be a wardrobe staple for years to come.

"Sam is such an amazing designer to work with. She really listened to what I wanted to create and she helped me bring my idea to life. I can't recommend her enough." Laura - Female Silhouette

When building her brand Laura considered the full package for Female Silhouette, from engaging with her customers on a personal level through Social Media to fun photoshoots with real women. The whole process is so important when launching a Fashion Line, getting the clothing designs right is only step one in the very exciting process.
